Like many geocachers say,

" A bad day geocaching is better than a good day at work..."

I couldn't agree more as I went for a geocache just off of one of the many local green-ways in Cary, North Carolina. Had a lot of fun getting to and back out a nearby find.

Geocaching World - CITO 2012 Episode

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - EP. 246 - GeoWoodstock X

That's right boys and girls. The grand daddy of geocaching events Geowoodstock turns ten this year and they are taking it right back to it's roots by hosting at Sellersburg, Indiana. This makes it literally about 9 miles from the very first Geowoodstock event.

During tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast you could just feel the excitement from two of the event committee from GWX who were our guests on the show. Both Daggy and Ronny answered all of our questions that we thought would bring the most value to you our listeners. The whole crew was here tonight so XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself (HeadHardHat) really enjoyed ourselves as the show progressed.

I don't want to give everything away but I think it is important for everybody to know that registration for Geowoodstock X ends on April 15th. So be sure to get your registration package, err, well, registered.

The Mega event is held this year on May 26th, 2012. Don't you dare miss it. I know that I will be there so be sure to stop by and say hi!

All Geocachers Should Learn From The Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Geocaching Merit Badge

Recently I did an episode of Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) about the requirements the Boy Scouts have to complete for their Geocaching Merit Badge.  To be honest I was so impressed with them I made the bold statement that all geocachers should try to earn their own Geocaching merit badge Boy Scout or not. What do I mean by this?

For a Boy Scout to earn the Geaocaching Merit Badge they have to learn all the key aspects of the game, sport and obsession. Next they must fulfill basic requirements with hands on techniques and finally they teach others what they have learned and become active members of the Geocaching community. It is an extremely well rounded program that demonstrates all the aspects of the game with an understanding of the environment and our neighborhood communities. In my humble opinion - AWESOME!

Let's go over some of the highlights. 

Understanding the differences between a GPSr and a Compass - learn how to use them. 

I am so into this, when it comes to geocachers who do more than just your standard park and grabs. I am referring to the ones who go into terrains that are off the beaten path and you truly need a tool to get from point A to point B. We rely so much on our smart phones and GPSr units when venturing out but what about the situations where they are no longer an option? Now what? Knowing the basic skills of using a standard compass and a map should be a requirement because you just never know.

Be Prepared.

The Boy Scout motto and yet so many geocachers go out into the wild not knowing what awaits them then wonder why things go bad and they are not prepaired to handle the situation. The first thing the Boy Scouts are taught to do is anticipate the environment they will be going to, understand the potential hazards and have the proper tools and equipment in case something happens. Just a case in point. When is the last time you even replenished your automobile first aid kit? Do you even have a first aid kit in your automobile? Good things to think about.

Get Involved

Several of the opportunities a Boy Scout has when earning his Merit Badge is to participate Geocaching including projects like making their own Boy Scout Travel Bug or host a Geocaching event. Tons of fun activities like teaching another Boy Scout Troop or local group how to geocache. CITO events are also encouraged which I thought was a great way to help the community as well. It is all good.

So as you can see even from this set of highlights that the Boy Scouts have the right idea and how everyone can learn from them on how to be actively part of the Geocaching family.

That Geocaching Bug Is Starting To Bite

I leave my office building here in Cary, NC and the sun today is especially warm. The skies are very blue and the sense that winter, what little we had this year, is now an ever distancing memory.  After opening my cache mobile's trunk I look down to see my trusty Geocaching backpack, pouch and walking poll. 

"Oh man I really want to go Geocaching", is my first thought and in the back of my mind I can feel the Geocaching bug telling me to "go-go-Go!". So yes it is spring and for this area it is time to dust off your gear, replenish your swag bag and plan all the maintanence that may be needed for you existing Geocaching hides. Oh, and getting yourself outside and making those finds too.

Where to start first? For me I will be doing a bunch of park and grabs just to shake out the cobwebs and get my Geocaching seances a tingling again. Then when the weekend rolls around I will be taking a large bag of swag, new log books and my emergency Geocaching repair kit with me. I find maintenance is much more fun if I scout some new Geocaching finds near my hides so I can do a little of both. Then I mark off all the geocache hides from my list so I don't miss any and also archive any that are deemed necessary. Things do change over time and a once great hide might not be so much now due to unforceen factors. The main thing is you are taking the extra steps to make Geocaching as much fun as possible by keeping your hides current.

Ah well, the old clock on the wall says my lunch hour is going fast and I want to get a close by geocache just waiting for me.
