Did You Look Before You Leap Day Geocached?

Hey, just in case you didn't know it's leap day!

If you are a geocacher and more importantly a geocacher that is trying to fill up their geocaching calendar (basically taking credit for finding at least one geocache for every calendar day of the year). Then this is a chance that only happens once every four years.

So if you have not found a geocache on February 29th yet you better hurry. Cuz your next chance won't be until 2016.

Don't forget!

P.S. found mine during my lunch hour at work. -HHH

Snoball: Set Triggers to Donate to Non-Profit Charities

Jeffery Powers and Andy HeadHardHat Smith at CES2012 TPN.tv Booth

If you are a non-profit, this is a great way to get donations. People would log on to Snoball and integrate giving tp charities of your choice.

For instance, if you set a goal, you can donate to a cause. These triggers will act when something happens. For instance. I could say: I’ll donate $100 if my Twitter followers reach 1,000. When that happens, the trigger is tripped and your account will send the money.

This can work with a business – after so many Foursquare check-ins, a business could donate to their charity. There is also a cap, just in case the Snoball goes viral. You don’t want to break the bank.

There are over 1.6 million nonprofits to send donations to. These are 501C and 170C non-profits, as registered by the government. Start a Snoball, Share a Snoball and see the good.

For instance, there is a Snoball right now that when Jeremy Lin scores, someone is donating 5 cents to Garden of Dreams Foundation.

They are working on defined categories, but you can definitely search for local charities to give money to. There is no “random” option, but Snoball does feature charities that you could get behind.

This is all tax deductible. You can get a report at the end of the year who you gave money to.

Ford on Researching Innovation: CES2012 Interview with Jeffrey Powers and Andy HeadHardHat Smith

Jeffrey Powers and Andy HeadHardHat Smith at TPN.tv Booth
We talk with Johannes Krisstenson at Ford talking about research at Ford. They are displaying some wonderful research information of what vehicles are coming in the future. My Ford Touch is one of those things.

We talk about the new Ford Fusion and how it shows some of those features. 100 MPGe, smart energi charge, and more. Pulling out of the driveway, the car is quiet – no emissions. We talk about missing the sound of the rev.

The input for research comes from not only a think tank, but also customers. Research and listening are two things that bring innovation of tomorrow in vehicles.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast - Ep.#240 - Alternate Trackable Services

Had a full crew and another great show tonight when doing our latest rendition of the Geocaching Podcast. Our latest episode was all about Alternate Trackable Services. Sometimes we have subjects for the show that when you realize it is a topic of discussion and you think to yourself. "There is no way we are going to get a full show out of that." This was the case with tonight's show but one of the great things about XpunkX, Darrylw4 and myself is we can have an active discussion about pretty much anything. So if we need filler we can pull it out of thin air. Long story, short we had more than enough to discuss and some left over. Always a great thing.

This episode discussed a lot about Darrylw4's current obsession with figuring out sixty some puzzle caches and my move to my new residence. Another large chunk of discussion was about GeoKrety, Where's George, Serentripiti and other traveler web sites. To get all the details be sure to listen to the entire show when it comes out.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

See you next week!

OpenCaching.com Has Some New Updates and Reminds Us Of Some Geocaching Guidelines

This was sent out today from the folks at OpenCaching.com. Thought you might be interested.

-HHH

Get familiar with local rules
Our handy geocaching guide lays out the basic rules of geocaching. But some special areas can require that you follow additional rules and guidelines. For example, some parks may require permits before you place a cache while others don’t allow geocaches at all. To help you navigate these special requirements, we’ve created a database of local rules*.
Like everything on OpenCaching.com, the data belongs to the community; this a publicly accessible, open and free database. When you hide a new cache on the site, you’ll be shown any regulations that apply to your new cache and you’ll be asked to explain how you followed those rules in your notes to reviewers.
The local rules database is designed to empower geocachers to work closely with governments to promote responsible geocaching. If you know of an area with a geocaching policy not listed in the database, let us know and we’ll add it – check out the news page for details.
See our other site improvements
We’ve listened to your feedback and made a ton of improvements to OpenCaching.com over the past several months. We’ve enhanced the hide and review processes, added an RSS feed, doubled the size of our geocaching guide, improved our support for non-English speaking cachers and more. Check out the full list of updates on our news page.

You can read the memo in it's entirety by clicking here.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching World (RVNN.tv) Ep. #919 - Geocaching Faux Pas

It is so good to be back in front of the camera again as we recorded Geocaching World last night while being joined by our very robust and informative chat room. I do have to admit that we had to work out some cob webs and technical difficulties but the show was great as usual. Yeah we had some hurdles all right. For me personally after coming back from some health issues and dealing with a move to my new residence things have been pretty hairy. In fact my temporary spot for my studio (aka the front room) was finally put together about an hour before the show.

There be gremlins here. It doesn't matter if you are doing something relatively basic like a podcast or more elaborate like a video-cast you are always going to run into technical difficulties. Tonight was no exception when things like right in the middle of the show my wireless router simply failed. It never did this before and maybe it was because of the move but BOOP! no internet connection at all. Co-Host Courtney Wallin and Managing Director Andy McCaskey did an impromptu fill in while I banged electronics with large blunt objects but eventually I made it back to continue our discussion. Don't you just love it when things like that happen while in a LIVE recording?

Speaking of the show we ran with a subject I very much enjoyed talking about recently on the Geocaching Podcast in regards to Geocaching Faux Pas. Those nasty little no-nos that we may or may not do while out hunting for geocaches. We talked about everything from how you should not put foul language in a cache log to don't lie to the authorities if approached. All in all we discussed over two dozen topics. You will just have to watch the show when it comes out in distribution.

Our prize winners received some really great swag from our Geocaching World Cache Stash which included a CoinsandPins.com First To Find Traveler Tag and a CoinsandPins.com Earth Geocaching Pin. Way cool and congrats to Mike Neal and Louis Caplan for winning these great prizes.

Other points of interest is the introduction to a new segment being shown on RVNN LIVE called Geocaching Radar. It is a quick jam packed summary about any possible place in the USA. Included is some great travel information and a description of a choice geocache that you may be interested finding in your travels. Be sure to check that out on RVNN LIVE.

Did you know that on ROKU there is now an official RVNN Channel? That's right, you can now join the potential three million plus Roku viewers and watch all of the RVNN.tv shows right on your TV! That includes Geocaching World. Check out all the details here: http://rvnewsnet.com/

As always I want to thank all the fans and viewers that visited us in the chat room while we recorded the show. It is always so great having you there. Thanks for being there.
-HHH

If you are a company who would like to participate with our Geocaching World Cache Stash Sponsorship Program and donate prizes for our show please email geocache@rvnn.tv for more details.

Behind The Scenes: Geocaching Podcast: Ep. #239 February Cacher Coffee

Boy did it feel good to be back in the saddle again by doing the Geocaching Podcast last night. After being away for a few weeks I really missed not talking with Darrylw4 and XpunkX. Unfortunately XpunkX was not able to be part of our February Cacher Coffee but our friend TheBadCop was.

The show this week we spoke in depth about the demise of the GeoMate Jr. GPSr product line and our suspicions as to how this unique niche unit could be discontinued in such a manner.

We also discussed the introduction of CacheSence for the Android smartphone. This was formerly CacheBerry for the BlackBerry phone.

I don't want to spoil the show so that is all I will bring up for today's Behind The Scenes of the Geocaching Podcast. You will just have to download it and enjoy when it becomes available either today or tomorrow.

We record the Geocaching Podcast each and every week on Wednesdays at 9:30pm EST. The recorded episode for this week will be available any time now via iTunes and the Geocaching Podcast website.

See you next week!

One More Week of Madness Then HeadHardHat Is Back!

I really want to thank all the fans, viewers and geocaching seekers out there who has been putting up with my recent winter hiatus.  Here is the latest status.

If all goes well I will be moving to my new residence this Saturday. It was delayed a couple of weeks which threw my whole schedule out of whack. I wasn't able to do "Geocaching World (RVNN) last night because most of my 'studio' is packed and in partial transit. I will though be doing the Geocaching Podcast tonight via my laptop, portable microphone and a hand crank. Should be interesting.

As far as my health goes my leg is SLOWWWWLY  healing and still a bit of a discomfort. Doesn't help when I am moving stuff and should be staying off it but ya have to do what ya have to do..

So please be patient one more week and things should settle down a bit after I get things set up at the new place. I am going to setup a temporary studio downstairs whilst the main room where my studio will reside is getting sound numbed and wired. It will be so cool when done.

Again thanks for all the well wishes and 'where the heck have you beens?'.

So much stuff coming this year including more goodness from CES2012!  Stay Tuned.
